A high altitude, mountain mencía from the bodega Baldovar 923 ( D.O. Valencia )
Cerro Negro 2022 represents a truly distinctive red wine crafted from the Mencia grape variety. It sets a remarkable precedent within its own realm by virtue of its vineyard, “El Masecillo,” perched at an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level in the Valencia Designation of Origin (D.O.). This vineyard stands as possibly the loftiest Mencía vineyard across the Iberian Peninsula. In stark contrast to its Galician and Leonese Mencía counterparts, Cerro Negro showcases a distinctively Mediterranean character, largely influenced by its unique climate and the surrounding underbrush.
The aroma is a blend of lavender, geranium flowers, strawberry, cherry jam, toasted wood, and a subtle earthy note that blends nicely. It has a strong and deep scent that continues to develop as it’s exposed to air.
In terms of taste, it starts smoothly and with a slight richness, followed by a refreshing middle that highlights its acidity and fruitiness. It leads to a well-structured and slightly salty finish with firm but not overpowering tannins. The overall mouthfeel is smooth and fresh, and you can distinctly taste the chalky quality in its tannins.
